The joy of remodeling

We finally started the remodel process.

I saved up enough to do the fireplace but not much more than that. Frank realized that having me do the remodel as I saved up enough money was not only going to take years but also meant we'd have to live with some of our house being a mess while I saved up.

For example, when I put in the new fireplace, it will mess up the carpet/floor. But that wouldn't be able to be repaired until I saved enough to do the floors/island/kitchen which all had to happen at the same time.

He finally decided it wasn't worth the hassle and said we should just bite the bullet and do the whole remodel at once. It was exciting but also a bit scary because it's a lot of stuff.

I've always kept a list of a lots of things I'd like to change about the house and I've never told him the whole list since I figured I'd do it gradually. Well, now I laid it all out:

  • New tile in entryway
  • New light fixtures: entryway, over stairway to basement, kitchen, dining area and laundry
  • New/remodeled gas fireplace with changed surround
  • Hardwood floors to match front room throughout main floor/hall/stairs to basement
  • New kitchen cabinets
  • New countertop/backsplash
  • Shiplap on ceiling of kitchen
  • New double oven and microwave, cooktop, vent hood
  • New tile in laundry room
  • New cabinets in laundry room, countertop, backsplash
  • Paint
  • Added during the process: new doors/trim (something I've always wanted but figured I'd wait...seemed like the right time to bring it up)
  • I also decided I needed to repaint my secretary since the red no longer went with the room.
Some things went smoothly and some did not. It was definitely a bit stressful and expensive!

We moved out kitchen table into the pantry along with the microwave and toaster. This is where we did all of our eating/making food.  We ate out less than I thought we would but mostly because we were just exhausted so going out sounded too hard and we'd rather eat cereal or cheese sandwiches.

We wanted to keep the sink in the laundry room so we'd have a decent access to water/dish washing etc. But we had to remove the cabinet beneath that sink in order to remove all the old tile. So Frank put a piece of wood to hold it up once the tile was out. It was not beautiful but it worked!
We decided to wait til the kitchen was complete before starting the laundry room. That way we always had a sink.

Every room in the house suffered.
Bedrooms became storage spaces. All of my plants had to be relocated. Furniture had to come away from walls for painting and moved in and out of rooms as floors were done.

Florida!

The mistake I made in 2023 (and probably the year before) is that I didn't blog about things right when they happened. I waited, thinking I would remember what to say or how I felt or what we did. And then...forgot.

I'm at risk of already doing that this year as we went to Florida over a week ago. But I am trying really hard to turn over a new leaf with writing and blogging, so here goes!

My boss, Dr. Free informed me that he was taking a trip to Hawaii in January. As usual, I jumped on the chance to also be gone when he is gone.  We didn't really know what we wanted to do and since we are in the middle of a giant remodel, we did know that we didn't want to spend a fortune. So tropical was basically out (though we looked!). We decided we'd like to be in a warmer place so we ended up choosing South Florida. I had never been and it's been a super long time for Frank.

We flew into Miami after taking a red-eye. We knew we'd be tired but since you can't check into a hotel in the morning we made plans for some activities. We planned to do the coral castle which is near Miami and then go to the Everglades. Turned out he Coral Castle is closed on Wednesdays! DOH!

So we went straight to an airboat ride in the Everglades.

We knew the weather would be mild but not like super warm/beach weather. I had planned to bring a light jacket and leave my winter coat in the car. I forgot to leave my winter coat in the car and I also forgot to pack a light jacket. Anyway, we arrived at the airboat place and it was about 63 degrees with a stiff wind. I was SO GLAD I had my winter coat! There were people there in shorts and t-shirts and they were in full on regret. Once we were on a boat going fast, I was super glad to have that coat. There was a lady in front of us trying to stay warm behind her backpack...

Next we went to our hotel which actually had a 1:00 checkin which we were so happy about!  Once we had taken a nap, we looked up places to eat and went to a local place call "Chef's on the Run" since it had really good reviews. We each had very yummy burgers and I also had mac n cheese (I've been on a mac n cheese kick lately). It was actually chipotle mac n cheese so a bit spicy for me but Frank also enjoyed some. We realized we were right next door to a theatre so we ran over and saw a movie that was just starting.

*I swear I was having fun. Frank caught me off guard and I do have RBF

Day 2-We decided to spend most the day day in the Everglades and then we'd drive down to our airbnb which was in the keys. The original plan was to arrive at the airbnb around 4. Frank had a meeting he had to do at 5:00. We bought a  driving tour of the Everglades which was good. We always enjoy a good driving tour. It basically took us all through Everglades National Park. We forgot our national park pass but we thought it was close to expiring so we bought a new yearly pass. I still haven't checked to see when the other one expires because I don't want to know if we did a dumb thing. LOL

We saw lots of cool birds and several alligators in the park. We did a couple of short hikes. The highlight was an alligator that started growling (for lack of a better word) when a bunch of loud tourists were right by him. It was super loud (we weren't that close) but then when he started growling it sort of set off a bunch of other gators who joined in! We couldn't see them but realized there were lots all around. It was so cool and I was glad I wasn't right by him when he started that! We made it to the end of the park and had lunch in a little restaurant there. Frank walked to the beach but the mosquitoes were too much for me.

We ended up stopped at a random parking lot for Frank's meeting because we were WAY behind schedule. We ended up arriving at the airbnb around 8 or 9 I think.

Day 3- Our airbnb was on Cudjoe key. The airbnb was very cute and in a little neighborhood where every house sits on the edge of a canal leading to the ocean. Many neighbors have boats and went out fishing each day. I sat on the back deck to eat breakfast and enjoy the nice weather each morning.

We spent the majority of the day walking around Key West and seeing the old downtown. We went to the lighthouse as well. We saw lots of cool old buildings as well as the "Little White House" where presidents have spent time in the Keys. It was a lot of walking for my foot but it was a lovely day overall. I don't think we took many pictures unfortunately.

Day 4- We had breakfast a local diner and it was yummy! We then went to a local beach thinking that we would spend some time just enjoying the beach and water but it was quite windy so we just walked around mostly. We really enjoyed seeing part of the original 7 mile bridge and learning about how it was made.

We went to a small pond that had a little hike around it. It's supposed to be a place where people often see deer and sometimes an alligator or two (two live in the pond apparently). As we went to the viewing area there was one of the alligators just swimming along right nearby. They look quite graceful when swimming!

Our next activity that day was an afternoon sailing adventure with kayaking and snorkeling and sunset sail at the end. Since it was so windy, they were able to sail us out without using the motor and it was quite fun and the crew enjoyed being able to sail. They provided drinks and snacks. The kayaking was through a bunch of mangroves and I enjoyed it a lot as well. Since it was windy, I wasn't terribly excited about snorkeling as I knew I would be cold! The snorkeling was in a sponge bed rather than a reef. I will say that Frank and I are a bit spoiled and we've been to some really amazing snorkeling...so this was not too impressive. Very silty and I only saw 2 fish total. There were some cool sponges which was kind of fun to see. But we didn't snorkel long and I was super glad when the crew offered me a blanket!  I ate my weight in tortilla chips as we sailed back. hah

Day 5- Breakfast at the same breakfast place which was again delicious. We had to drive back to Miami today so that we can catch a very early flight. As we were driving we saw a long expanse of the original 7 mile bridge with people walking on it. It seemed to go to a little island. So we decided to stop. The bridge length was 2 miles ending at Pidgeon Key, a small island that was where the workers lived as they were building the original bridge. I love historic stuff like that!

We ended up walking the whole way, which was a long way for my foot. The wind was at our back and there were lots of birds flying by taking advantage of the wind. I enjoyed watching that!

We took a tour of the island and its old buildings. In theory you can swim but it was too cold for that.

We continued our drive up to Miami and decided to stop at the Coral Castle, which was now open!  It was a weird little stop. The guy that built it was clearly a recluse and a bit strange but also made some cool and difficult sculptures. They really have no idea how he made that place.

Our trip came to an end with a 6 am flight back to Utah where Dion picked us up. I was super glad to have that whole day off to just unpack and get organized for the week ahead.

It was a nice trip and I'm glad we went. It felt very fast and we missed seeing some things so I hope to go back to that part of the world another day!

A visit

William visited for a little while today and he was at first a bit concerned about our lack of flooring and presence of kitchen appliances in the living room.  But in the end he really enjoyed all the open space to run and push his lawnmower! The kitchen is so roomy with no island or cabinets!

He has also discovered the pockets in his pants and it is soo cute!

Adventures in Babysitting!

Today I babysat Dante and spent the majority of the time in my car because Baldr cannot relax in my presence and thinks I should spend all my time playing with him and NEVER show the baby any attention. Luckily Dante enjoyed the car and eventually took a nap in my arms.

He is such a cute kid and I love his guts.

2023 in Review

2023 in Review

My worst year ever for blogging. I may not remember a darn thing from 2023...

  1. What did you do in 2023 that you'd never done before?  Got new E-bikes and did a little (very little) biking. Actually did a single track mountain bike trail and pretty much hated that.  Frank wishes I would be more open to new experiences and he's not wrong.

  2. What would you like to have in 2024 that you lacked in 2023?  A little more self control (though I did better this year than in many past years), happy knees, more time with girl friends.

  3. What dates from 2023 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?  Dante  Roman Hill was born to Ryan and Kristal on May 5, 2023. I got to attend the birth which was exhausting and exhilarating and heartwarming and a bit scary too. haha So many emotions!  I gave it very little thought when I had my children...I knew I planned to have them and so I did. Now that I'm on the outside, I find the whole thing terrifying.
  4. What was your biggest achievement this year? I decided to be proactive about my health and got a bunch of testing done...all of which came back terrible! I was mad at even finding out but it did spur me to make some changes. One of the best ones is that I joined a local club where I lift weights with a trainer. It is expensive so not sure how long I can keep it up but it is helping me a lot.   My other big achievement is that I finally convinced (whined enough that he caved) Frank to get moving on the remodel of the kitchen and family room!
  5. What was your biggest failure? You mean learning opportunity?  Fell off the wagon for scripture study/inklings/church. Getting a headache whenever I go to church makes it really hard to feel motivated I will admit.  But I'm turning over a new leaf, again!
  6. Did you suffer illness or injury?  My knees were bothering me a lot so I started physical therapy. The weight lifting seems to be helping a lot also.  I got foot surgery on my right foot the day before Thanksgiving. I have been putting it off for years but the doctor said I had enough damage that I shouldn't put it off anymore. As of this moment I am still in the surgical shoe but get it off next week and then start physical therapy. A little nervous.
  7. What was the best thing you bought?  A designer to help me finally figure out a plan for the new fireplace.
  8. Where did most of your money go? Helping kids, saving for remodel of fireplace.
  9. What did you get really, really, really excited about? New grand baby! Austin came to visit...twice! Finally doing the remodel on the house. Having the Michigan family here for Christmas this year!
  10. What song will always remind you of 2023? None. I can't even think of a song right now. I should probably listen to more music.
  11. Compared to this time last year, are you: Happier or sadder? Fatter or Thinner? Richer or Poorer? About the same, a bit thinner (thanks weight lifting!), richer at the moment but about to be poorer when I pay for the remodel stuff.

  12. What do you wish you'd done more of? Visiting Michigan, visiting girl friends, being happy for no reason

  13. What do you wish you'd done less of? Working...how else can I do all that traveling I say I want to do!  But also, I like being able to help kids and also save for stuff I want to do/have

  14. What was your favorite TV program? We do watch a show almost every night. Slow Horses was a favorite. Also Severence though that might have been last year, not sure.

  15. What was the best book you read? We found a new author that we like and I'm working my way though his books. His name is Michael J Sullivan and the first group of books was the Riyria Chronicles. So good.

  16. What did you want and get? Not done yet, but remodel is being planned and will happen! Foot surgery though I wasn't excited, I'll be glad if my foot is now pain free. I made a point of visiting Logan a fair amount so that William will know me. I always enjoy the day up there.

  17. What did you want and not get? a million dollars. just kidding.

  18. What was your favorite film of the year? I still love Spirited and watched it twice this year. Would have been more but I try not to annoy my family too much. I'm sure I saw other movies and I'm usually pretty easy to entertain but I can't remember anything right now.

  19. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 56. Here is what I did.  It happened way back in January so I've always forgotten by the time I do this thing.

  20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2023?  I'm continuing to try to buy clothes that are more authentically me but I fall back into the comfort zone of flannel shirts and t-shirts especially on my day off. I enjoy comfort too much to be truly fashionable. Obsessed with my kizik shoes.
  21. What kept you sane? naps, Marco Polo with Candice, Pickleball, walks

  22. Which celebrity did you fancy the most? I don't care about celebrities.

  23. What political issue stirred you the most? too many terrible things going on. I have trouble even staying informed without it affecting my mental health.

  24. Who is the best new person you met? Dante Roman of course! He's mostly a stoic little thing except he really lights up for his mama and daddy. Until recently he was just fine with us babysitting occasionally but has entered the stranger danger phase and now pretty much hates us. I'll have to win him back of course.

  25. Who did you miss? girl friends, Michigan family (only got myself out there once this year!)

  26. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2023. I feel remarkably better when I don't eat sugar or lots of carbs. Hard to stay on the wagon but much improved from past years! I still love YNAB and enjoy budgeting and feeling on top of things money-wise.
I think I'm supposed to include pictures but my computer is having issues doing that right now. I'll try to add some later!

Annual birthday post

Well, the Michigan folks came for Christmas and we also had Carter's family and Ryan's family here a lot over the break...and we got some new germs. I succumbed to the illness on the 3rd of January and by my birthday I was well and truly sick.

I called out sick to work on Thursday night and spent my birthday in bed/on the couch with tissues and cold medication.

Frank was willing to take me to lunch and/or dinner but I just wasn't up for it. I think he got us take out but I honestly can't remember..it's all a blur.

Frank gave me some new workout clothes which was nice. Ryan stopped by with a card and some mini cinnamon rolls. Austin and Branden both called. And I chatted by text with Carter but he was also sick. Amber sent me some gem art to do for when my house is torn apart and I need a distraction (they worked on one while there were here and it looks pretty fun!)

I was hoping to feel better the day after my birthday and we bought tickets to see the newest Hunger Games movie but I ended up cancelling that because I still felt horrible. We ended up renting it at home though so we still watched it. I had read the book so I knew it wasn't exactly uplifting but, yeah, downer movie when you're already feeling crappy. ha!

I hope and plan to go to lunch with my sisters this week or as soon as I feel better. I've already called out sick to work tomorrow (it's 1/7 as I write this) because I still feel horrid. The worst is that when I'm sick it sometimes triggers other things that make life even worse: cold sores (yep, got several) and the ice pick headaches (so far those have been off and on and not debilitating).

I also plan to make myself a cake at some point! Or make Frank do it. But that get's harder the further away from my birthday we get. I did tell him that I want a birthday do-over when I'm feeling better because this one sucked.

I have a tradition of taking a selfie on my birthday just for fun/show the passage of time. But man, I look bad. I took one but probably deleted it. If it's still there when I have energy to check, I'll upload it here.

I tried to smile  in the hopes it would improve the picture but alas. No makeup, cold sore, hair fresh from shower and not styled at all, feel like death. There you have it: 57!

Men are from Mars...

I always make sugar cookies to give to neighbors each Christmas. Over the years I've done different designs but I've pretty much settled on wreaths on a round sugar cookie. It's pretty and also easy.

Frank offered to help this year but, in true Frank fashion, it wasn't about making it beautiful or taking your time...it was about making it fast and easy. He set up as many cookies as would fit on a cookie sheet and began squeezing that icing as fast as possible. Not a beautiful wreath exactly but it gave the idea. Then he would sprinkle the jimmies on the whole pan (they don't stick well to icing that's dried out at all so that didn't work all that well).

It made me laugh but he did get way more cookies done than I did in the same amount of time.

Can you tell whose cookies are whose?
